Outdoor Learning (Science Garden – Sustainable Development)

At Wilkes Green Junior School we are developing a growing garden for all children. Within the garden we will grow fruit, vegetables, herbs and bee-friendly plants. The garden will support the school curriculum whilst enabling children to learn new skills and gain new knowledge. In addition the garden will help all pupils to understand where food comes from and how it can contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Previously, the area was a grassy section of the playground that was underused. A new fence was erected around the grass and a whole-school competition was held in order to gain garden design ideas from the children. Children primarily suggested raised growing beds, bird feeders, benches and hanging baskets. The area now has five substantial growing beds, two large planters at the entrance gate and two bird feeding posts. A group of Year 5 children currently maintain the garden area on a weekly basis and all children will benefit from and experience growing in Spring term 2015.

Year 5 and Year 6 will be involved in a gardening club to maintain the area and to grow flowers and vegetables.
